The gradual popularization of smartphones that support multifunction applications has driven businesses to adopt mobile business applications while also driving the growth of m-commerce (mobile commerce) among consumers. At the same time, the emergence of this type of device has also driven strong demand for mobile phone data security. The global mobile phone security market was worth an estimated US$280 million in 2007, soaring 29.7% from 2006. The outlook for 2011 is that the global mobile security market will be worth approximately US$960 million, with a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 36.3%, driven by growing demand for mobile phone antivirus protection, firewalls, encryption and anti-spam solutions.
Not only are traditional PC data security vendors rushing into the mobile phone information security value chain; mobile phone operating system providers, handset brands and mobile communications operators all play key roles in the mobile information security industry value chain. At the current stage, these four types of vendors are taking seriously the threat that mobile phone malware poses, and the strategies that they have adopted to develop the mobile phone security market vary depending on the individual companys positioning and its competitive advantages (Table 1).
With the Growth of M-Commerce, Mobile Phone Handsets Are Becoming an Effective ToolforIdentity Verification M-commerce applications have gradually spread from the PC to the mobile phone following the gradual popularization of mobile phone handsets that support business functions, and a growing number of consumers – particularly businesspeople – are using their mobile phones for money management. This has prompted securities firms to work to provide a secure environment for order placement via a mobile device. As far as regulatory issues are concerned, in June 2006 the Taiwan Stock Exchange clearly stipulated that approved electronic signatures must be used for all electronic documents sent between securities brokers and individuals that have contracted with securities brokers to undertake mobile electronic transactions.
As a result, several handset manufacturers, information security software vendors and certification firms have been working together in the m-commerce security market to ensure the security of mobile orders for securities. In January 2007, Taiwanese PDA vendor Eten joined forces with the four large securities firms Yuanta Core Pacific Securities, Mega Securities, Jih Sun Securities and Taiwan Securities to develop a CA (certification authority) mobile order placement security system that combines Eten’s M-Stock mobile securities-trading software, Formosoft’ s mobile security system and TWCA’s safety certification system.
Handsets with Comprehensive Security
Functions Appeal to Niche Market Security has become an important consideration for consumers when buying a handset, and handset vendors are competing fiercely to meet this new demand. Following ”music handsets”, camera phones, smartphones, Wi-Fi handsets and GPS phones, ”secure handsets” now have the potential to become the new mobile phone ”killer application” or the next wave for feature phones. In the past, camera phones and music handsets gradually established themselves as mainstream products thanksto simultaneous promotion by major handset vendors, encouraging consumers to replace their existing handsets with these new handset types. So far, however, the large handset manufacturers such as Nokia and Motorola have yet to develop “secure” concept phones and have been limited to mainly collaborating with antivirus software providers in selling smartphones with antivirus software.
In fact, the “security handset” remains an unrecognized and undeveloped segment of the mobile phone market, and there is definitely clear demand for handsets that integrate security monitoring, identity verification, low EMF, fingerprint recognition, E-commerce transactions, anti-theft and antitapping functionality. The healthcare sector, securities firms, the banking and insurance sector and government agencies all constitute potential markets for handsets of this type, as do business executives, the elderly, females and children.
